What to Expect from a Photography Session in Barcelona

Booking a photographer in a city you've never been to — or even one you know well — can feel a little uncertain. What actually happens? What do you wear? Will you feel awkward in front of the camera? Do you need to pose?

These are the questions I hear most before a session, and I want to answer them honestly. Not with a polished FAQ, but the way I'd explain it if we were sitting down for a coffee the day before your shoot.

It's Not a Photoshoot. It's a Walk.

The way I work — and the way I think photography in a city like Barcelona should work — is simple: we walk, we talk, we explore. I'm not directing you into poses every few minutes. I'm not asking you to stand against a wall and look at the camera while I count to three.

What I'm doing is getting to know you, paying attention to the light, and being ready for the moments that happen naturally. A laugh mid-sentence. The way you reach for someone's hand. The pause before you say something. That's the stuff that makes a photo worth keeping.

The camera is there. You'll forget about it quickly.

Before the Session

Location: I'll suggest spots based on what you're after — something iconic, something hidden, something romantic, something with the energy of the city. If you have a place that already means something to you, tell me. We'll make it work.

Timing: Golden hour is non-negotiable for me. That's the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset. The light is warmer, softer, and more cinematic than anything you'll get at midday. If you're flexible, evening golden hour is usually the easiest — sunrise requires commitment, but the city you'll get to yourself is worth it.

What to wear: Wear something you feel good in. Genuinely — not "photoshoot good," just comfortable and like yourself. Avoid very busy patterns or matching outfits that feel forced. Layers work well. If you're a couple, loosely coordinate colours rather than matching exactly. And wear shoes you can actually walk in.

Nerves: Completely normal. Everyone feels a little self-conscious at the start. Give it ten minutes and you'll forget there's a camera involved. I promise.

During the Session

Sessions typically run between one and two hours, depending on what you've booked. We won't rush — there's no checklist to get through. The pace is relaxed and unhurried.

I'll give you light direction when it helps ("let's walk this way," "stop here for a second") but I'm not a poser or a "put your hand here" photographer. Most of what I capture happens between the setups — the in-between moments, the real ones.

Barcelona itself does a lot of the work. The light bouncing off the stone walls of the Gothic Quarter, the golden glow over the rooftops at Bunkers del Carmel, the reflections in the lake at Ciutadella — the city is always contributing something to the frame.

After the Session

Within a few days, I'll send you a preview — a small selection of edited images so you have something to look at while the full gallery is being finished.

The full gallery arrives within two to three days, delivered through a private online gallery where you can download everything in full resolution. No watermarks, no limits.

The editing style is cinematic and film-inspired — warm tones, natural light. I don't over-edit. I'm not adding artificial skies or smoothing everything into something unrecognisable. What you get is you, in Barcelona, looking like the best version of yourselves.

The Most Common Question: What If We're Not "Photogenic"?

I hear this a lot, and I want to be direct: photogenic isn't a fixed quality. It's not something you either have or don't. It's almost entirely about feeling comfortable — and feeling comfortable is something a good photographer helps create.

The best photos I've ever taken were of people who told me beforehand that they hate being photographed. Because once they relaxed, something real happened. And real is always more interesting than perfect.

What Makes a Session in Barcelona Different

There's something specific about this city that makes it extraordinary to photograph in. The architecture, yes — but more than that, it's the texture of it. The worn stone, the painted shutters, the way the light moves through the streets. Barcelona has atmosphere built in. All we have to do is show up at the right time and pay attention.

You'll walk away with photos. But you'll also walk away having actually seen the city — the corners that don't make it onto the tourist maps, the light that most people never catch because they're not here early enough, the quiet version of Barcelona that exists before the day gets loud.

That's what I'm really offering. Not just images, but an experience of the city that stays with you.
